Xero review: what the UK partner data shows

Most Xero reviews rehash the feature list. We can add something no reviewer has: the register data. 1,944 UK accountancy firms hold a verified listing in Xero's official advisor directory, and a further 2,659 name Xero on their own websites. Here is what that says about the product - and how to use it when picking an accountant.

The short review

Xero is the cloud-first ledger: bank feeds, invoicing, VAT and Making Tax Digital filing, unlimited users on every plan, and the broadest app marketplace in the UK market. It is the package accountants who started practices in the last decade tend to build on. The recurring criticisms are equally well documented: repeated price rises, payroll as a paid add-on beyond a small allowance, and support that is ticket-based rather than phone. None of that has dented adoption among the firms we track.

What the tenure data says

The median verified partner joined the programme in 2015 -687 of 1,944 firms have been partners since before 2016. That is a decade of practices staking their workflow on the product, which is a stronger signal of staying power than any feature comparison. It also means Xero experience is easy to find: this is not a niche skill you pay a premium for.

Qualified, not just certified

963 of the 1,944 verified partners list at least one professional-body affiliation on their directory profile: ACCA leads with 471firms, ICAEW and ICAS (chartered) account for 488, AAT for 360, CIMA for 86. The vendor badge and the professional qualification are different checks - a certified partner that is also a supervised, qualified firm is the combination worth looking for.

Specialisation badges tell you what a partner actually does day to day:550 hold the migration specialisation, 461Making Tax Digital, 447 payroll, 354 UK tax. Worth asking for the specific badge if you are switching software or dreading MTD.

Who it fits

  • Good fit: limited companies and growing small businesses that want live bank feeds, app integrations and collaborative access for their accountant.
  • Weaker fit: the smallest sole traders on tight budgets (entry plans are invoice-limited) and payroll-heavy businesses, where add-on costs stack up.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xero good for small businesses?

Yes, for most. It is built for cloud bookkeeping: automatic bank feeds, unlimited users on every plan, and a large app marketplace. The trade-offs are subscription cost creep and payroll costing extra beyond the basic allowance.

What does a Xero partner tier (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) mean?

Tiers reflect points from certified staff and active Xero clients. A higher tier means a bigger certified Xero practice, not necessarily a better accountant - but it does mean real, current, at-scale experience with the product.

How much does Xero cost in the UK?

Xero sells monthly per-organisation plans, priced by feature level (invoicing limits, multi-currency, expenses). Prices change often and promotions are frequent - check the official Xero UK pricing page for current figures rather than any third-party list.

Do I need an accountant who is Xero certified?

Not strictly - any competent accountant can work in Xero. But a certified partner is trained and assessed on it, and the tier tells you how much of their practice runs on it. 1,944 UK firms hold a verified listing in the official advisor directory.
