How to read this
- QuickBooks leads on breadth. 3,863 firms name it - the most of any package. It is the default suggestion for small limited companies and sole traders.
- Sage is the incumbent. Strong in long-established practices and payroll bureaus; less common in cloud-first firms.
- Xero is the cloud specialist choice. 2,659 firms name it, and a further 1,944 are verified partners in Xero's official advisor directory - the only package where we can check certification, tier and tenure on the public record.
- FreeAgent and Dext are niche but real. FreeAgent clusters around contractors (it is free with NatWest, RBS and Mettle business accounts); Dext is receipt-capture used alongside the main ledger, not instead of it.
- Multi-software is the norm. 3,266 firms name two or more packages; 1,082 name both Xero and QuickBooks. Most accountants adapt to your choice, not the other way round.
Firm age predicts the choice
Joining each firm to its Companies House incorporation date turns up a clean split. Firms naming QuickBooks or FreeAgent skew young - median incorporation 2018 and2018, with 62% and64% incorporated since 2015. Firms naming Xero skew oldest of the cloud packages (median 2012, 43% since 2015) - established practices that migrated deliberately, not startups that defaulted to it. Sage sits between (median 2016). If you want an accountant who has run books through a recession as well as an app, the age data is worth as much as the logo wall.
Median CH incorporation year of firms naming each package (3,734 QuickBooks,2,995 Sage, 2,655 Xero, 1,363 FreeAgent firms with a parseable date). Data: verifiedaccountants.co.uk register, 2026-07-30.

Frequently asked questions
What accounting software do most UK accountants use?
Across 6,894 UK accountancy firms that name their software publicly, QuickBooks is named most often (3,863 firms), with Sage and Xero close behind. Most established firms support more than one package - 3,266 firms name two or more.
Does it matter which software my accountant uses?
Less than fit and qualifications, but it is worth matching: if you already run Xero or QuickBooks, an accountant who works in it daily will onboard you faster and charge less for cleanup. All the mainstream packages are Making Tax Digital compatible.
What is the difference between a firm mentioning software and being certified in it?
Mentioning it on their website says they work with it. Certification is a vendor-verified tier: Xero, for example, ranks partners from Bronze to Platinum by certified staff and client count. We verify Xero certifications against the official advisor directory.
Which software should a small business choose?
The one your accountant supports and your bookkeeping habits fit. Xero and QuickBooks lead for cloud bookkeeping with bank feeds; Sage is common in established practices; FreeAgent is popular with contractors and is free with some business bank accounts. Compare with your accountant before committing.
