Xero vs QuickBooks: the UK data

The internet has a thousand Xero-vs-QuickBooks feature tables. It has no adoption data - so here is ours. Across 6,894 UK accountancy firms that name their software publicly, QuickBooks edges the mention count, Xero carries the only vendor certification we can verify at register level, and 1,082 firms simply run both.

What the overlap means for you

1,082 firms name both packages - the single most useful number on this page. It means the choice is rarely binding: accountants follow their clients' software more than the reverse, and switching support is easy to find. Choose on your own workflow (users, payroll, integrations, renewal price), not on which package accountants "prefer" - measurably, they support both.

The age split

The sharpest pattern in the data: firms naming QuickBooks skew young (median incorporation2018, 62% since 2015), firms naming Xero skew established (median 2012, 43% since 2015). QuickBooks is what new practices start on; Xero is what practices standardise on. Neither is a quality signal by itself, but it explains the pricing: Intuit discounts to win the new firm, Xero prices for the committed one.

The verified layer

One asymmetry worth knowing: Xero publishes a tiered advisor directory we verify our listings against - 1,944 UK firms, Bronze to Platinum, with partner-since dates (median 2015) and specialisation badges (550migration, 447 payroll, 461 Making Tax Digital). Intuit's ProAdvisor directory is not yet in our register, so QuickBooks expertise is self-declared for now. If certified support matters to you today, Xero is the side where we can prove it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xero or QuickBooks better?

Neither, categorically - which is what the adoption data shows: 3,863 UK firms name QuickBooks, 2,659 name Xero, and 1,082 work with both. QuickBooks wins on entry price and breadth of accountant support; Xero wins on unlimited users and its app ecosystem. The right answer is usually whichever your accountant runs daily.

Can I switch from QuickBooks to Xero (or back)?

Yes. Both sides offer migration tooling and most accountants have done it many times; the both-camps firms in our data are the natural choice for a switch. Migrate at your year end, keep read-only access to the old ledger.

Which is cheaper, Xero or QuickBooks?

QuickBooks is usually cheaper at entry and discounts the first months heavily; Xero bundles more (notably unlimited users) at its higher entry price. Both raise prices regularly - compare the official UK pricing pages on renewal cost, not the promo rate.

Should I choose my software or my accountant first?

Accountant first, in most cases. Software is a monthly subscription; the accountant relationship carries your filings and tax position. Pick a verified firm you trust, then take their recommendation - our data says they will support either.
